A homework routine that fits your family.
A place to work, a time to start, and permission to ask for help. Try one small change and see what works for your child.
Set up a place to begin.
Clear enough room for the work, with comfortable lighting and the supplies your child needs.
Let your child know they can ask for help. Give them room to try before stepping in.
Put unused devices away and turn off notifications. Keep a device nearby if the work needs it.
Choose a time that fits your family. A snack, a little movement, or a break may help first.
Keep the next step manageable.
- Choose one thing to start
- Look at the work together and pick a manageable first task. Write a short list if that helps.
- Plan a break
- Agree on a short work period and a break. Adjust the length to your child’s needs and the task.
- Let them show what they know
- Ask your child to explain a step or show an attempt. Give them time to put it in their own words.
- Know when to stop
- If the work feels too much, pause. A teacher can help you understand what to prioritise and what support is available.
When they get stuck.
Try asking, “What have you tried?” or “Which part feels confusing?” Look at one step together, then let them have another go.
If the method looks unfamiliar, our parent guides show worked examples you can follow.
Adapt these ideas to your child. Follow any support plan or guidance from their teacher or specialist.
