A champion weightlifter has a child. Which of these can be inherited: her lifting technique, her trained strength, or her eye color?
Common mix-up
In this example, a student wrote Her trained strength, so the child will be strong too..
Training builds acquired traits; they are not written into DNA, so they are not inherited.

See why this works
Can a parent's workout be passed to their children?
You said the champion's kid will be strong. Inheritance repeats instructions, not workouts: training changes the body, not the genetic code.
Genes are DNA instructions for traits, half come from each parent, and acquired traits are not written into genes.
A gene is a section of DNA that carries instructions for something an organism builds or does. Some genes code for proteins that build eye pigment, enzymes, or body parts. Together the genes are the recipe book of life. When a new baby is made, the recipe book is assembled by taking one copy of every gene from each parent.

This is why children resemble both parents, not just one. From each parent they receive one allele of each gene, and alleles are simply different versions of the same gene. A brown-eye allele and a blue-eye allele are two versions of one gene. The two versions pair up, and the combination helps decide the trait you see. Every person carries a mix drawn from both sides of the family.
Some alleles are dominant: they show up even when paired with a different version. Others are recessive: they show only when a child receives two copies of them. This is why two brown-eyed parents can both carry a hidden blue-eye allele and have a blue-eyed child. Dominant and recessive describe how the versions interact; they say nothing about which version is healthier or stronger.
Now the weightlifter's child. Strong muscles built by years of training are an acquired trait: they came from exercise and diet, and the genes did not change. Only mutations written into the DNA of the germ cells can be inherited. Able to lift more, speak another language, or run faster: all of that is learned anew by her children. Generations of blacksmiths do not automatically give birth to giant babies.
Keep this idea
Genes carry inherited traits, one allele comes from each parent, dominant versions hide recessive ones, and acquired traits are not inherited.

Is breathing the same as cellular respiration?
You said respiration happens in the lungs. The lungs move air in and out; the useful energy release happens inside every one of your cells.
Try this lessonWhat happens to the DNA when a cell divides?
You said the DNA splits in half so two cells can share it. The DNA is copied first, and both new cells end up with a complete set.
Try this lessonWhere does a growing plant's mass come from?
You said the soil feeds the plant. Soil holds water and minerals, but most of the tree's wood is built from carbon in the air.
Try this lessonWhich organelle makes the cell's energy?
You said the nucleus makes the cell's energy. The instructions live in the nucleus, but the energy-making has a different address.
